Cluttercore: The Scariest Home Design Trend That Makes Us Cringe

Written by Aislinn Teachout

Move over minimalism—maximalism is here.

While quarantine ushered in many trends and new design ideas, one of the most out there may just be “cluttercore” design style. Going against just about every organization principle we’ve been taught our whole lives, Gen Z has decided to spice things up with an intentionally cluttered aesthetic. This organized chaos trend is basically the opposite of minimalism where spaces look lived in with decorations, mementos, and things abound.

Still can’t picture it? Think messy teenage bedroom.

It’s the Gen Z trend that is going viral on TikTok and Instagram. Many cluterrcore advocates say they embrace the style because it allows them to bring personality into their spaces by decorating with things that fill them with joy. By purposefully filling rooms with meaningful knickknacks, picture frames, books, and figurines, it can make for a cozy, comfortable, and secure space, some enthusiasts say.

While some may find this trend stressful and confusing, one TikTok user described it as akin to “a warm hug.”

Clutter, but make it intentional.

Not sure what’s scarier: this ‘design’ trend/aesthetic or how old it makes us feel…
