Founded in 1821 by fur trader, Rix Robinson, today Ada is a quaint, growing village situated near the convergence of the Grand River and the Thornapple River that features restaurants, a small brewery, a great bicycle shop, a beautiful covered bridge, and—by 2017—will be home to the second location of Kingma’s grocery store, a locally owned and operated market that’s served the Grand Rapids community for 80 years. The small downtown community is easy to walk around and a fun place to spend an afternoon or evening. There’s a farmer’s market in Ada every Tuesday during the summer months and the township hosts family-friendly events throughout the year, including a dazzling bridge lighting ceremony at Christmastime.
Golfers and swimmers often practice their hobby at Ada Egypt Valley Country Club. Other nearby private country clubs include Cascade Hills Country Club, Kent Country Club, and Blythefield. Four area golf clubs have joined together to provide members access to each of the clubs with their membership: Watermark, Sunnybrook, Stonewater, and Thousand Oaks. The area is also home to many public golf courses.
Ada is the home of Amway’s headquarters, renowned global sellers of home, beauty, and nutrition products. It’s located just outside of downtown Ada, which is formerly a charming but sleepy village that’s seen dramatic change in the past year. It’s currently in the midst of a transformation, adding not only Kingma’s grocery but renovating and recreating the downtown, expanding the shops and businesses and building residential lofts and row houses. The project is being tackled in phases; they expect to finish phase 1 by the end of December 2016.
Housing options in Ada vary widely, from the existing traditional homes and new lofts and row houses being built downtown to safe, family-friendly neighborhoods and country homes with substantial acreage. Ada is part of the award-winning Forest Hills Public School district.
