Everyone, we made it. The sun is finally shining and it is no longer 10 degrees below zero. Contrary to what Game of Thrones’ Eddard Stark might think, winter has already passed. I don’t know about you, but now that it doesn’t hurt my face to stand in the open air for more than 10 seconds, I want to enjoy my time outside.
However, you may be asking yourself, “Well what is there to do outside on a Tuesday evening in downtown Grand Rapids that is fun for all ages and free to attend?” Boy do I have an answer for you. Swing Dancing!
Every Tuesday evening from 7-10 PM during the summer months, hundreds gather for the Grand Rapids Original Swing Society’s free swing dancing at various spots throughout downtown Grand Rapids. Whereas Rosa Parks Circle has been the usual spot for previous years’ Swing Dance nights, this year’s agenda features exciting locations such as the Blue Bridge, Anabawin Park, and the Gillette Bridge.
Open to varying degrees of skill in Swing Dance, anyone from an expert to an absolute novice can have an outstanding time. For example, from 7-7:30 PM the Swing Dance Society gives basic lessons to anyone willing to listen.
Featuring live bands on occasion or a DJ from the Grand Rapids Original Swing Society, Tuesday night Swing Dance delivers the music that will get you moving. If dancing to classic swing music is not your cup of tea, you’re in luck because all styles of music are featured while everyone swings to the beat.
If you thought this idea could not get any better you’re wrong. Line dances, or a dance with a repeated sequence of steps, are also introduced and accepted from the crowd with great enthusiasm. While line dancing might seem repetitive to some, it is a great excuse to keep moving and makes those of us (myself included) who are lacking in any dancing skills appear to be at least somewhat coordinated.
I started going to Swing Dance with some friends as a beginner with no prior knowledge and still had a blast. The excitement and good energy there is apparent to anyone who stops by and this is what drew me back again and again.
Whether you’re looking for a perfect date night with that special someone, a night out with friends, or simply something to do, Swing Dancing is for you.
Not only is Swing Dancing an excuse to get out on a weeknight and get some exercise but it’s also something your grandmother would approve of. So pause your Netflix for a couple of hours and go have the time of your life!
