It may not be December but today certainly feels like Christmas for many in Grand Rapids. Today it was announced that Trader Joes and Whole Foods two of the nation’s top chain healthy grocery stores are opening up locations in Grand Rapids. People in West Michigan have been asking for Whole Foods and Trader Joes for years now so the news is truly a blessing to many.
The news was announced today by Colliers International who said the chains who have wanted to open in West Michigan for a while now have finally committed to securing locations in the Grand Rapids area. The locations will most likely go in the Ada/Cascade areas (but this has not yet been officially decided) but as usually happens with these grocers, once one opens the chain opens more close by.
Trader Joes and Whole Foods which both have numerous locations on the East Side of the state have no locations West of Novi, MI leaving many West Michigan residents driving hundreds of miles just to get their fix of 2 buck chuck and other staple products. Two Buck Chuck for non-aficionado’s is Trader Joe’s signature brand of $3 wine (it used to be $2).
To further add excitement to the day the report also announced that retailer H & M would also be opening up a store in Grand Rapids.
With the new additions to the various Farmers Markets and this news of specialty healthy grocers it really seems like Grand Rapids is finally getting some help in the food department. We already have some of the best restaurants in the country, now we will have some of the best groceries as well. One more reason first time home buyers will be excited to build roots in Grand Rapids.
Trader Joes and Whole Foods we are excited to have you in Grand Rapids.
Which brings us to our hot button question: do you prefer Trader Joes or Whole Foods?
**** Update*** 3/7/13 Trader Joes Corporate is not confirming the news, and says although they are very interested, immediate plans have not been solidified. Whole Foods has more concrete plans but a location similarly has not been acquired. H & M however plans to move into Woodland mall. It may be a while before either Trader Joes or Whole Foods are actually in West Michigan…..
